Day 364 1 more day to LOVE Heucheras!

temp-post-image

I have had so much fun taking pictures, learning about, writing about, growing and loving Heucheras for the last 364 days. One more day to tell the world just how amazing this wonderful evergreen perennial, the Heuchera is. One more day to scream from the rooftops that I LOVE Heucheras and why. Why? They are evergreen. They come in a ton of different colors that are all so gorgeous contrasting against each other that it is almost blinding. Heucheras are easy to grow, easy to divide and easy to maintain. If they get aphids or disease like rust, they are easy to deal with. Just chop them back and let them flush out again. They play well with other plants. they are not aggressive and are fantas...

Day 365, 365 Days of Heuchera Blog CHECK

All good things must come to an end and I don't know about you, but for me writing the 365 Days of Heuchera Blog was a good thing. I was able to spend more time actually planting, growing and maintaining Heucheras than any other year at the nursery. I was able to communicate with other growers and collect tips and hints from the best. I was able to write about my beloved plants AND on a few occasions slip in some personal information about my amazing children, my friends, my staff and customers as well as my mom and dad. OH and I can't forget my fiance........

Soooooo Give me an L

Day 361 4 days to talk about Heucheras

temp-post-image

How much do I love Heucheras? I love Heucheras so much that when I see this picture I think to myself, self, wouldn't it be fun to just lay down in the middle of all that and take a long nap. Now this either speaks to my love of Heucheras or maybe I am just really really tired. It may be a bit of both. It has been a long challenging but wonderful year filled with lots of laughter, lots of love, mixed with sadness of loss, personal and business challenges and more laughter. All the way through their has been support from friends, family, staff, customers, and of course my Bill and my Heucheras.

Day 358 Heucheras in a planter shaped like a head

temp-post-image

As many of you know both my mom and dad lived and died with Alzheimer's. We fundraise for a cure and have raised over $40,000 to date. The holidays are a time when I think about my parents a lot. We had wonderful Christmases and both my mom and dad really had a way of making me feel the magic of Christmas. I still believe in Santa Claus.

Nichols Stoneworks, a local statuary design company makes the stone female and male head planters that we sell. The idea came from when I first decided to create a Memory Garden at our nursery and I needed a way to represent Alzheimer's in a garden. The human head is what I came up with. We call our garden the 'Plant a Head for Alzheimer's Memory Garden. We h...

Me, Bill and the Heucheras wish you the merriest Christmas and hope you enjoy time with friends, family and good food!

Day 357 The best new heucherella ooops

This describes this wonderful new Heucherella:
Outstanding vigor combined with brassy gold and red spring color on maple shaped leaves. A beacon in the garden. Use this large, evergreen, landscape perennial in mixed beds, under high branching shrubs, or in a container. Spikes of white flowers on dark stems. Winter color olive and brown. Best color contrast with some shade. It's a beauty and we have been thrilled with the quick growth of this robust plant.

I really like the 'Falls' series too but was hoping they would grow faster than they did. I love the LOOK of 'Stoplight', 'Solar Eclipse' and 'Solar Power' and will see how they perform over time but 'Brass lanterns' grew way above my expecti...

Day 356 New gardening Term for heucheras

temp-post-image

The Heucheras in the Memory Garden are still looking very good. I think this one is 'Amethyst Mist'. I love the way the undersides of the leaves contrast with the top. I would say that this variety is one of the Heucheras that are as 'Evergreen' as any Rhododendron or laurel, but Heuchera Amethyst Mist' has that gorgeous purple color that is so divine. There needs to be a new gardening term created called 'Everpurple'. I wonder how I would go about doing that?
