Also known as "Sweet Box", Sarcococca is a fabulous fragrant evergreen shrub that is a must have for every northwest garden. Sarcococca grows in a shady to part shady spot and can get to about 4' tall and wide. Very fragrant white flowers in late winter to spring followed by red or black berries. This is a good one for a container or on the pathway to your front door. There are other varieties that only get to about 12".

They grow in shade, part shade and there are some that will thrive in the sun. They have flowers that hummingbirds love and foliage that changes from season to season. Helleborus 'Merlin' is the #4 Best Northwest My Garden Plant for 2012! 


Helleborus 'Merlin' is a sturdy evergreen perennial Dark stems hold these cranberry colored flowers in winter to early spring. Merlin will behappy planted in shade to part shade in the landscape or in a container. The color really holds up and is great in a mixed planter.

This is a stunner. Amethyst Gem Hellebore has amazing color and double flower petals. What more could we ask for. Hellebores can take most exposures but really enjoy shade to party shade. Blooms as early as January and as late as April or May. Evergreen foliage can be cut to the ground in the spring to make it easier to view flowers. Cutting any blackened foliage helps keep plants disease free too. We use lime chips to help with the black spot Hellebores are prone to. Lime chips are available in the early spring at My Garden.

    Helleborus 'Jacob #6 Best Plant 2012 


Jacob is a bright white Hellebore in the dark of winter that will life to your front porch and even use inside like a poinsettia It can bloom December, January, February and longer. Mostly evergreen a nice little mounding plant for a shade to part shade location. The white really stands out against the deep green foliage. Plant one in a green glazed planter with heuchera and a sarcococa. Add some red twig dogwood branches for height and enjoy!

#7 Best My Garden Plant is a tropical plant called 'Neon Pothos'

Neon Pothos is a fabulous indoor plant for anyone who wants an easy houseplant. It is great as a hanging plant or on top of a tall piece of furniture. Most Pothos thrive in the a dark corner but Neon will have the best color in a bright location. It can trail up to 10 feet in time but you can cut off trailers and root them and give to friends.

Rhododendron PJM is the number #9 Best My Garden Plant for 2012!



There are so many different types of Rhodies you wonder ask why this one stand out. PJM is one of the earliest blooming and even the foliage is pretty. It turns dark burgundy in the cold of winter. Only growing 3-5 feet tall it fits into most small northwest gardens nicely. The flower color is a vibrant pink against the dark foliage. One of my favorites!
