As you know, I am one of the biggest fans of heucheras. I am guilty of romanticising them, putting them on the proverbial garden pedestal, and even closing my eyes to the reality that maybe they arent completely evergreen BUT they are SO pretty! and unfortunalty sometimes they can look downright ugly. The above is a heuchera that is feeling so cold that it has literally jumped up out of the ground. Frost heave is a problem with heucheras. It can be solved by mulching in the fall. I have had success with digging them up and planting them deeper. This can be a good time to cut or pull off all the little offshoots and plant them in pots for friends or just pop them into different places in the garden. Cut off any damaged leaves and dont look at it for a while. Set a pretty purple planter full of primroses in front of it. By the end of March, it will remind you just why it is the BEST evergreen perennial there ever was.
